Sergio & Michaela: The Next Chapter

This is a quick update on characters from The Knot series. If you haven’t read The Vow or The Matrimony, I would skip this bonus scene as it contains major spoilers!

SERGIO

The door to my office opened and Michaela entered quietly. I glanced at her before returning my attention to the myriad of emails on my screen. Between answering a week’s worth of messages and catching up on edits, I was exhausted. Tia had sent over a few scenes from The Come Up for me to watch. After spending a week in Paris, I’d missed quite a few days of filming. I understood how much she valued my opinion, so I made it my priority to watch the clips as soon as I returned. For the past hour, I’d been reviewing the footage and typing out my notes.

Michaela’s presence reminded me that I needed to be getting ready for our dinner date tonight. As she neared me, I noticed two pregnancy tests in her hand. My heart jolted and my eyes widened. I met her blank expression. The emptiness in her eyes impelled me to manage my expectations. For the past six months we’d gotten unfavorable results from these tests. We’d done everything we were supposed to do: doctors’ visits, lifestyle changes, and continuing to put our marriage first, and still… we hadn’t gotten the good news we anticipated. I’d never admit this to my wife, but I was beginning to lose hope.

We survived the terrible twos and were stronger than ever. Michaela’s career was thriving and so was mine. We were at a place in our lives where it only made sense to become a family of three. Maybe our eagerness to start a family was the reason we were often met with disappointment.

I turned in my chair, ready to comfort Michaela in my arms. She extended her arm for me to take the tests. I tugged at her wrists but stopped when she shook her head. My pulse quickened as I braced myself for what I’d grown used to seeing; not pregnant or one faint line that made my stomach knot. I looked down while holding my breath. My gaze met hers and a smile formed on her lips. One test displayed the single word I’d longed to see. The other had double lines.

“Mick,” I whispered.

Michaela’s eyes glossed over with tears as she nodded. I placed the tests down, then scooped her in my arms and twirled her around. Her warm coconut and shea butter scent filled my nose as I inhaled deeply.

“I’m pregnant,” she uttered in disbelief. I released her and pressed my hand on her stomach. She placed her hand over mine. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she looked at me.

“We’re having a baby,” I said, cupping her cheek. After wiping away her happy tears, I kissed her. We went at it until we were breathless. I didn’t know how else to convey my excitement. Words escaped me and my mind raced a mile a minute.

“Now I know why I’ve been so tired lately,” she mused while taking the tests back.

“And I thought it was the time differences and jet lag.”

During our week in Paris, Michaela was more lethargic than usual. She missed a few outings with our friends, opting to sleep instead. Again, I didn’t think anything of it because otherwise she seemed fine.

“Me too, but now that we know the reason, I’m relieved.”

I smiled. “I hope she has your eyes.”

Michaela blushed. “And if it’s a boy?”

“I hope he has your heart. I love you and I can’t wait to embark on this journey.”

She wrapped her arms around my neck. “I love you too and I wouldn’t want this life with anyone else but you, Sergio.”
